We've all seen it. Disneyworld mastered it, and the movie Edwards Scissorhands glorified it. You may know this tree and shrub technique as a cute way to trim your trees or a fancy way to spice up your lawn or business landscape; it's called topiary--that cool word for cutting trees and shrubs into ornamental shapes. You may notice it at the places you visit or at your place of work, but have you ever weighed the pros and cons of having your own topiary? Keep reading as we look into some real and exciting facts about topiary.
It's Good For The Environment
The more real trees and shrubs that surround a home, the more carbon dioxide that gets absorbed and more oxygen reintroduced into your air supply. Trees and plants also reduce the amount of water runoff from storms, which lessens pollution and erosion in waterways and can decrease the effects of flooding. Choosing what trees to have in your yard or landscape can be a tough decision, but can be easily solved by some arboreal research and by talking to a professional tree service company that you trust.
It's Aesthetically Pleasing
Topiary and well-trimmed, maintained trees add a beautiful visual effect to your home and commercial landscapes. There's something immaculate and unique that topiary accomplishes, different from regular tree trimming. People's eyes usually go straight to the shapes, and ornamental feel of topiary, and each tree trim can be different depending on what you want to see in your yard or home.
It Makes A Great Hobby
Many people DIY topiary because it's fun, relaxing, and breeds a beautiful oneness with nature. The peacefulness and tranquility of trimming and cutting trees into maintained masterpieces is something that also drew us to tree cutting in the first place. Though, DIY topiary can be done with inexpensive items for both real and fake tree topiary.
If you decide to do some topiary on your own, we suggest following safety measures (protective eye-wear is always helpful!) and purchasing the right tools to get the look and feel you'd like to accomplish. Certain plants, particularly those with small leaves, lend themselves better to topiary design. As you’d expect, there are some great videos on DIY topiary that can help you get started. We especially love this DIY spiral topiary, so we'll leaf this right here for your viewing pleasure.
It Requires Tree Upkeep & Maintenance
While it shouldn't come as a surprise, topiary can be expensive, and upkeep needs to be regular. Dissimilar to your usual tree and shrub trimming and pruning, the designs and shapes tend to grow out. Think of it somewhat similar to that fresh haircut or manicure you get that needs refreshing every couple of weeks. Trimming trees and shrubs without topiary is easier to maintain as you don't have to work so hard to keep the shape that topiary provides.
While topiary is a stunning addition to many fancier homes, it's also a delight for the every day residence. The decision lies with the consumer on whether or not the benefits outweigh the more regular upkeep and maintenance. We think it's a great thing to give a try!
