Florida residents know very well that mangroves are an essential element of the state's coastline. However, they grow quite tall, and once they reach a certain point, trimming is necessary.
As a protected species, these trees can't be removed or cut without a proper permit. In this article, we'll cover everything there is to know about trimming mangroves in Florida.
Why are mangroves so important?
Mangroves are a vital part of Florida's ecosystem, and they play a significant role in preventing erosion. They offer an excellent natural infrastructure that successfully absorbs storm surges and other effects of extreme weather.
Their roots help build healthy soil and filter phosphates, nitrates, and other major pollutants from water. Mangroves also provide a habitat for the diverse wildlife that includes many bird species, fish, mammals, and plants.
Get a permit before trimming
Florida residents are not allowed to trim or remove mangroves of their own accord. Mangrove trimming is regulated under the F.S., "Mangrove Act," and a permit is required before taking any action.
When to trim mangroves
There is an optimal time of the year when trimming mangroves is most desirable. Between October and March, mangroves grow the least, and trimming won't disturb any new growth.
In some regions of northern Florida, the best time to trim would be around a freeze event. It removes the damaged parts of the tree that could potentially cause it to die.
How to measure a mangrove
Mangroves are measured from where their trunk is rooted in the soil. It's also known as a substrate. Place a survey pole at the base of the mangrove to measure it correctly.
Are there any trimming exemptions?
A Riparian Mangrove Fringe, or RMF, represents a part of the Mangrove Act that outlines when mangrove trimming is subject to an exemption. These exemptions allow trimming of mangroves growing along the shoreline and do not extend more than 50 feet from one's property.
However, the exemption only allows trimming of the mangroves no lower than 6 feet. If there's a need to trim them lower, a special permit is required.
When to use a professional mangrove trimmer?
A professional mangrove trimmer, or PMT, has the mandatory certifications that allow them to trim mangroves under the Mangrove Act properly.
In most cases, homeowners with mangroves over 10 feet on their property will have to contact a PMT and not perform the task independently.
Protecting the unique landscape of Florida
It's a delicate balance between maintaining a healthy ecosystem created by mangroves and removing them and trimming them recklessly.
Obtaining proper permits before trimming mangroves is essential. And if you don't know how to manage mangroves on a property, reaching out to certified PMT is the right decision.
